Journey Into The Bible

A 4 week course + workbook journey on how to read and understand the Bible

Registration is now closed. If you'd like us to let you know when host it again (mid to late 2020), you can join the waitlist

Here's what we're doing...

Who is this course for?

  • If you’ve been away from Bible study for a long time but want to return to it in a setting where your sexuality/gender identity is an asset for reading and not a barrier to be overcome.
  • If you’re wondering how to engage with Scripture without having to check your brain at the door.
  • If you’re looking for tools to help you engage with the text while also understanding historical and literary contexts.
  • If you grew up evangelical, conservative, Catholic and are interested in different ways to read Scripture
  • If you didn't grow up conservative Christian but realize that your understanding of the Bible has been influenced by that agenda

What will it cover?

  • A basic overview of the different types of literature found in Scripture
  • Information about how scholarship around Biblical studies works
  • Tools for how you can go deeper in your own personal study
  • An overview of Exile and Empire which will help you understand the deeper meanings behind many stories
  • Conversation about how the Bible can continue to speak to you today.

Who is this not for? What will it not cover?

  • We aren’t going to talk about the seven “clobber passages”.
  • We aren’t going to discuss how you can retain a literal/inerrant view of the Bible and still affirm LGBTQ people.
  • If you’re a biblical scholar or have attended seminary you might find this course too basic (unless you’re looking for a refresher or wanting to engage in Bible study with other LGBTQ folks)

What's Included

There's A LOT in here — we're including a bunch of different teaching and communicating options so that you can learn and engage in the ways that are right for you. This is what you'll get

4 Weeks of Lessons

Each week, you'll get new materials: PDF lessons and workbooks and a weekly video lecture with Q&A.

Weekly Q&A Call

Each week, Fr. Shay will host a 60-minute video conversation to teach and answer questions pertaining to the week’s materials.

You'll be able to pre-submit questions if you can't join the session live. If you can tune in, even better, you'll be able to ask followup questions there too.

The Q&A calls are recorded so you can watch them at any time and still get your Q's A'ed :)

Interactive Online Community

Throughout the course — and after — you'll be part of a private Slack community to talk about the materials, ask questions, and share what comes up for you.

You'll have easy, direct access to ask Brian and Fr. Shay questions as well as hear from other participants. This is a great way to stay connected betewen live sessions, or if you can't attend any live sessions, still participate with the group.

Access to all of Sanctuary Collective

Your registration in this course comes with all-inclusive access to everything inside of Sanctuary Collective for three months.

Reviews from Our Community

This course is brand-new. Here are what folks have said about our other offerings...

“Sanctuary Collective is full of folks who are tender, hard thinkers, ready to do life together while we sort through theology. Finally I’m finding theologies that fit my life, because they come from lives like mine, and it’s becoming what I always hoped faith could be: a conversation."

- Emmett

“I’m so thankful that I signed up for this website and attended the Chrisianity & Polyamory course. The instructor did such an amazing job, and I’m so ready to do more courses from Queer Theology the future, too.”

- Sarah
